The Know Your City (KYC) Campaign is a groundbreaking initiative that amplifies the voices of slum dwellers through data-driven advocacy and planning. During my internship at Slum Dwellers International (SDI), I assessed the campaign's impact and outlined a strategic vision to enhance its role in urban resilience and community empowerment.
As part of my internship at Slum Dwellers International, I conducted an assessment of the Know Your City (KYC) Campaign, a global initiative aimed at profiling informal settlements to advocate for inclusive urban policies. My work focused on evaluating the campaign’s existing structure and identifying challenges, such as inconsistencies in data collection, digital platform limitations, and the need for standardization. I engaged with SDI affiliates across multiple regions, gathering insights to understand how the campaign could better support their work on the ground.
Building on this research, I proposed actionable strategies to align the campaign with SDI’s new five-year Strategic Plan. These recommendations aimed to transform KYC into a more effective tool for advocacy, planning, and resource allocation, empowering communities to address urgent challenges such as eviction risks and infrastructure gaps. The project underscored the importance of community-driven data and demonstrated how such platforms can foster resilience and sustainable urban development.
